homer city, PA on the drive-by: +/-

+ Apparent love of baseball (I saw two fields, just from 119).

+ Nice trails for walking/running/biking.

+ Bar called “Inn Solidarity.”

+ Big Sheetz.

+ Near tallest smoke stack in the country. *

- Immense pollution coming from said smoke stacks.

- Proximity to IUP.

* Despite its similarity in appearance to the plant where Homer Simpson works (and the name that would imply some sort of correlation), this place apparently is all about the coal, and is not nuclear. This brings to mind the fact that I have no clue how to distinguish one type of power plant from another from afar. And I’m not going inside to figure it out, so thank goodness for Wikipedia. Also, speaking of Wikipedia, I particularly enjoy the note that “on a clear day,” you can see the tall stack from Greensburg. I think one can assume that at the second dirtiest generating plant in the state, clear days are few and far between.

I went to HS there and spent a lot of time in and around that area. In fact, my father used to work at that plant… until he got a job at Keystone Generating Station, which is within 20 min. of that plant. My dad’s brother works at the Homer City plant. I’ve been inside and around both facilities and I can say it’s somewhat an intense experience. I was in awe of it when I was a kid and my dad would take me there, but now it just makes me a bit nervous.

    Anyway… it can’t be all bad… look how I turned out! :-)

Yeah, it honestly seems pretty nice, big polluting plant notwithstanding. I guess when you have a hulking monster like that looming over you, you try to establish as many little comforts as possible.

    Anyway:
