Ok, Spies…CSS Information

February 28th, 2008 by brian

I know some of you folk have been wanting to be able to edit the CSS for your particular blog from the Mu backend. It took some doing, but I tweaked the MyCSS plugin to (sort of) serve that purpose.

If you activate the MyCSS plugin for your blog, then go to Presentation, there will be a section where you can edit a .css file located on the server. It will be blank when you first access it. It’s not the .css file that is associated with your theme, but it will override anything in that .css.

No idea what I’m talking about? This is a good resource for CSS information. I think its main use is for small tweaks to themes – color changes and whatnot. If you have any questions, feel free to throw them in the comments to this post (and if you have any answers to those questions, answer them – I’m flying half-blind here).

Now, I think that this should work fine, and we shouldn’t have any problems with one person’s edits accidentally showing up on another person’s blog. If stuff like that happens, though, please post the bug reports here as well.

Enjoy.

You Gotta Bloggata*

February 26th, 2008 by brian

Is it more appropriate to respond to a blog post comment with another blog post, or with a comment on that original post? To address Andy’s concern here, I have this to say:

I struggled for a while with how to describe her tone. I came up with something passable, but when I decided to trim the post to one sentence, something had to give (imagine, me, making short sentences!). That something was, “a tone of desperate faux-flippancy”.

It was pretty intense.

*Make sure you read the title of this post with your thickest Pittsburghese accent.

Scene from a (Non)-Italian Restaurant.

February 25th, 2008 by brian

A waitress says, “No, I went to college in Ohio. I graduated last spring. And this is what I’m doing with my life!” just as the synths join in on the opening guitar riff of Glory Days over the Muzak.

It’s the little things.

Music for a cold winter morning.

February 21st, 2008 by brian

What do you do? Do you delve into bleak? Do you listen to The Coast is Never Clear by Beulah and think of summer days? Go for some Frida Hyvonen and be glad that at least in Pittsburgh we see the sun for a few hours a day in the winter? When you pair a portion of your day with music, do you go for contrast or similarity to bring out nuance?

Or do you just say, “It’s too early for this”, and put on the band that you’ve been listening to for a few weeks now and just keep on pretending that the world is soundtracked by a Swedish band who’ve never listened to anything but The Cure?

It’s been a while.

Things that have changed since I last posted regularly:

  • I have attended two weddings. I have no pictures of the other one, as I was the best man and was too busy trying not to explode because I had a speech to give.
  • I made several poor financial decisions, not limited to the purchasing of an Xbox 360, an LCD TV, a 10mm f/2.8 lens, and a new computer (which I built myself, a first for me).
  • A writer’s strike has come and gone, giving me plenty of time to catch up on TV shows that I missed – which I instead used to watch 30 Rock multiple times. I have begun watching Friday Night Lights, and have on more than one occasion cheered at a particularly dramatic moment. Horbal says this means I am a poseur. I think it means the show can manipulate me like whoa.
  • True Spies almost underwent a massive restructuring, which was then thought better of.
  • I have begun playing the guitar again, which I am sure my roommates and neighbors love.
  • I have also purchased Rock Band, a game that rewards intricately timed button presses or 80s-style midi drum kit hits with continued playback of songs that I could just as easily listen to from my mp3 collection.
  • I have taken a leave of absence from library school. I may or may not return to the program in the summer term. Hopefully, my lack of association with a library will not cause the other spies to vote me off the island, so to speak.

Oh, I also adopted this guy:
Gideon
That eye infection has since cleared up, come back, and cleared up again (I am a master of cat eye drops).
