Film Kitchen, the monthly showcase of regional independent film and video art, presents its annual contest. This year’s contest is photo-roman (pronounced: ro-MAHN) videos. Selected entries will be screened on June 10 at the June Film Kitchen. The reception with food and drinks begins at 7:00. All accepted entries will be screened at 8:00; winners will be announced that night, and first, second, and third prizes will be awarded, as well as an Audience Choice Award. Admission for the Film Kitchen contest event is $6.
While the judging process is taking place in another room, three invited filmmakers (not in competition) will present examples of their photo-roman work. They are: Karen Antonelli, Sally Bozzuto, and Jessica Fenlon.
For more information, do check out that website. I think I’m going to skip class to go to this . . .

Contempt (1963) (Regent Square)
Everywhere else:
The Fall (2006) (Waterfront)
Sex and the City (2008) (Carmike Galleria 6, Destinta Chartiers Valley, Manor, Penn Hills, Showcase West, South Side Works, Southland 9, Waterfront, Waterworks)
The Strangers (2008) (Carmike 10, Destinta Chartiers Valley, Showcase West, Southland 9, Waterfront, Waterworks)
* * *
I’ve been looking forward to seeing The Fall (2006) since reading this New York Times article by Dave Kehr describing the process by which it was brought to the screen and this rave review by Glenn Kenny even though I didn’t care for director Tarsem Singh’s last film, The Cell (2000). It sounds like a good night (or morning) out at the movies. I’m also super psyched for Contempt (1963), which I’ve never seen on the big screen.

The Hobo Film Festival comes to Garfield Artworks on Monday, June 2 at 8pm. The fest’s website lists some of the films that might play; according to this week’s City Paper John T. Davis’ Hobo (1991) definitely will be shown and Agency Films’ (the entity responsible for the fest) Shawn Lukitsch will be on hand to present the films and field questions.
