“The cinema is always as perfect as it can be”

The schedules for this summer’s “Cinema in the Park” screenings are now available online at the Pittsburgh Parks & Recreation website. I’m glad to see a few screenings in Schenley Park that I actually want to go to, such as The Iron Giant (1999) (still Brad Bird’s best movie) on July 13, Steven Spielberg’s A.I. (2001) on July 20, and maybe Stardust (2007) on July 9 or Westworld (1973) on July 27. Sure, the rest of the schedule sucks, but one or two excuses to make a picnic lunch for dinner and sit on Flagstaff Hill looking at the surprisingly gorgeous view of Oakland is all I ask; I got that, so I’m happy!

It’s mostly lame, as usual, which is disappointing, because Flagstaff Hill is a great place to watch movies (Oakland at night is surprisingly beautiful). Mark your calendars for these Pittsburgh Film Society events on the last Thursday of every month! It’s a great way to learn about the movies we’re watching, share your views, and meet people who love to talk film.

I can’t make it to this screening, but I strong recommend the film, which Strictly Film School’s Acquarello accurately describes as “delightfully and accurately” expressing “the poetry in the quotidian in all its intoxicating, dislocated presence and bittersweet, lingering memory.”

It looks like the film closes at Regent Square after this screening.

Some films by local filmmaker Mike Tamburo will screen at Modern Formations on Friday, June 6 as part of a bigger event called “Basements, Attics, and Closets.” Via MoFo’s calendar, a description:
