Here’s a little Halloween wrap-up post.
Massive Movie Month Continues
I ended up making it through 20 movies in the month of October, but I doubled up on Mystics in Bali, because a few folks needed to see it.
18. Spider Baby
Spider Baby, or the Maddest Story Ever Told tells the story of the Merrye family. They suffer from a rare genetic disease that causes them to revert developmentally after reaching puberty, until they turn into cannibalistic monsters. Features Lon Chaney and Sid Haig, and directed by exploitation maven Jack Hill (Big Doll House, Foxy Brown, and Coffy). Did I mention it is a comedy? Yeah….really fucking weird, but not unlike a more disturbing version of the The Addams Family.
19. Deadbeat at Dawn
Possibly the scummiest action flick ever made. Directed by Jim Van Bebber (The Manson Family), it tells the story of Goose (played by Van Bebber) and his attempts to take revenge on those who killed his girlfriend. Features nunchucks, throwing stars, decapitations, and every drug imaginable. I’m planning on making an excursion to Dayton next spring to try to track down some of the locations, if anyone is interested.
20. Mystics in Bali (reprise)
See review from a few days ago. One additional note: we noticed that the Leyak Witch kind of sounds like a fucked up Grover (or Yoda).
Metal Night Halloween Edition
The Metal Night Halloween party went pretty well. We had a few folks in costumes, including a cop, goblin warrior, devil, and some other sort of warrior. There was candy and pumpkins and metal and beer. What else do you need? Metal Night is every Thursday at the Smiling Moose.
Punk Night Halloween Edition
Dan Allen and Ed Um took over Kelly’s punk night last night (I assume John Doran, the regular DJ, wanted to be home with the family for the night). It was a cool mix of punk, noise rock, prog, and metal; most with a Scary/Halloween twist. Punk night is every other Wednesday at Kelly’s Bar on Penn Circle.
